CHOOSING A NATURAL STONE SEALER

When making the commitment to using natural stone for your project, there are three main cost that we feel customers should consider.

1) Adhesives: Choosing a skilled installer who uses the right adhesives will insure your project has a proper foundation

2) Material: With advanced technology, production of natural stone is now becoming more and more consistent.  The main consideration often becomes the aesthetics and visible aspect of a job.

3) Protection:  Cleaning and Protecting are the two facets that are involved here.  In order to keep the material safe and clean below the surface, choosing the right sealer is critical.

IMPREGNATING VS. TOPICAL SEALERS

Here we will compare using impregnating and surface sealers, and a brief overview of our most recommended/ sold products.

Surface Stone Sealers:  In general Elements Tile and Stone AU doesn't suggest using topical sealers on natural stone.  The issue with topical sealers is that it forms a strong non-penetratable surface from both the top and bottom side.  Thus the material is unable to breath trapping moisture.  Over time yellowing from trapped moisture can result and pealing of the sealer forming a mess.  In order to fix, the solutions can be very costly.

Impregnating Stone Sealers:  As the name suggest, these sealers soak into natural stone and fill the pores blocking containments from entering the stones surface.  The advantage of impregnating sealers is that the stone is still able to breath and there is not a surface film created.  When choosing a product, there are several brands, oil/ water based and those that will retain the natural colour or enhance.
